Cuauhtlahuac entintado digital / Digital inked

    Here, I leave you with the concept character of Cuauhtlahuac, inked digitally. What do you think? It is my first time using a non-classical technique to ink a drawing.

    The comparison is necessary. To the right we have Moctezuma (drawn with traditional inking technique, then scanned), and to the left is Cuauhtlahuac (digitally inked).

A detail about the faces of these two brothers:

    I had always been faithful to working with Chinese ink and pens as well as markers since I enjoy scribbling (as I call it), but now that I have experienced this new method, and I must admit that I like it a lot. It turns out the results are optimal for this type of digital work.  By the same token, I have saved a lot of time, so I can speed up this arduous and laborious project.

Digital inked Cuauhtlahuac head study

    As a result, I will continue and finalize the rest my work with this type of method; although, I admit I will continue to draw in pencil.

    If you can leave your opinion in the box below I will certainly appreciate it. I’d love to hear from you.

    Now, let’s color the tlatoani of Iztapalapa !!!

Hernán Cortés, a portrait I / Hernán Cortés, un retrato I

      Once  put in the right historic context (XVIth century first quarter) and made the draw studies about the adventurers dress whom moving  in the Caribbean was turn to concentrate on one of them and made a complete study about him using the gather information.
      I want to tell that most of the information gathered to the garments and arms was Internet. To fix a searching and selection guideline was useful  to me the previous steps described  lessons  without which  the web searchig becoming endless.
      So I get a good amount of visual references and with it start to work on the main castillian character of my story. Who was the man? Of course, no other than the unexpectedly  turn into soldiers adventurers expedition General Captain, Hernán Cortés.
      But before was necessary to know the iconographic tradition existing about this man to came into context.
       This first portrait is in the city hall of Medellin. Was paintend as a local government order to the painter Don Juan Aparicio Quintana circa 1957 after of an early portrait painted by someone Mélida and maybe is a idealized image.
      I put it first because is a Cortés young portrait and be part of the "images" that exist of this Conquistador  in our collective imaginary, without a historical basis of course.
       This other is the most archetypical and knowing image of Cortés which appeared in my school history books and I remember always. Here he maybe look in the moment of the México conquest or maybe  a little before...  if is true this portrait because we have before us another idealized portrait of unknow date and author.
       The next are images of an older Cortés. This portrait is based on XVIth century engravings; is a embittered, darker and cruel look Cortés. Probably it is from the Juicios de Residencia period in the life of the conquistador.
       Maybe from the same period is this copy after some original made in the XVIcentury and keep in the Museo Nacional de Historia de México. There are two more versions in painting and etching, with the same pose but is no whorth to described here.
      Summarize, all this portraits are idealized, imaginaries, posthumous or after others portraits and engravings versions of Hernán Cortés, invented, archetypical more than natural representations.

***

The Early Weapons / Primeras Armas

      Once finished the script, and check it, the first I made was take notes for the characters atrezzo. Was then that I be aware how immense work I have before me; at first glance vast.

      So one day, holyday to me, I take a ride to Madrid and visit the armoury of the Palacio Real to see the pieces that been housing there using the Wednesday free entrance at the afternoon.

Armoury of the Palacio Real de Madrid

      Very immpresive at first sight! Later, when I was draw on throughout the collection I notice that they have not much pieces , very little, from the XVIth century first half, the epoch that concerning me, especifically the period from 1500 - 1530. The rest of the collection, interesting and very valuable, rares and artistics pieces of art and worth of admiration, was, the most of them, Charles V's regalia armours. This no work to my proposals.

      There no allow photos so I must to take hand notes on paper only.

      I think I spend 3 hours standing, more or less, drawing and studying the pieces;

 bevors, morions and cabacetes; a couple of adargas shields and horses and dogs harness;

 swords and daggers form the Conquista period. At this respect I notice that the sword guards was some different from that I think to know; the sword guard was in cross-shape instead of the most elegant and complicated lace-shape guard of later years.

      The security guards come close to me curious to watch me draw amazed how I can do it with just a pen.

      The tourist too. One of the guards, a girl, say me that maybe the next time I must bring a folding chair. She was right! Just then I be conscious that I have the back make ruin.

      Finish the little notes of that day look over the rest of the exhibition for a while; I was exhausted. I go home very satisfied for the work made, aware that the matter was more complicated that I think.

                                                                             ***

      ¡A primera vista es impresionante! Luego, cuando fui avanzando por la colección, me percaté que poseían pocas piezas, muy pocas, de la época que me interesaba, es decir, la primera mitad del siglo XVI entre 1500 y 1530. El resto de la colección, muy interesante y con piezas valiosísimas y algunos ejemplares verdaderamente obras de arte y dignas de admiración, eran, la mayoría, armaduras de gala de Carlos V. Sin embargo no me servían para mi propósito.

      Para más no se podía o no dejaban hacer fotos así que tuve que tomar apuntes de pie con mis folios y mi cartón de apoyo.

      Estuve tan embebido en la labor que creo pasé 3 horas o mas, de pie, dibujando y estudiando las piezas;

barbutas, morriones y capacetes; un par de adargas y arneses para caballos y perros;

The "Black Legend"... / La "Leyenda Negra"...

Spaniard feeding Indian child to his dog, 1598 by Theodor de Bry.
      The Conquest, of the Americas in general, by the sword, apart from that of the Church, another conquest in itself, was distorted just after its beginning by something that still living among us, although centuries has been passed over. I mean the "Spanish Black Legend". As J. L. Lago affirm, this legend born in France in the XVIth century first half as response against the Spain victories in Europe, in military as well the political aspects (Charles I was elected emperor before Francisco I for example). Another contribution to this legend come from Las Casa (1474-1566) as well his work was praiseworthy we can't deny that he no doubt to "invent [and inflate] facts that, telling with great vehemence, become ammunition" for the Spain enemies.
Cover to the "Brevísima" by Bartolomé de Las Casas
      This legend has been like ink spread on paper reaching the Americas together with revolutionary ideas imported from Europe whom drive the independence movements in that continent, grasping in the hearts of people thirsting of emancipation. The rest no need commentary. Nevertheless I like to add that all that elements converge and configure the Conquistador archetypical look; scowling soldier, dense dark beard and morion, ruthless, cruel and cold, the image of evil itself. And all this elements in the "Black Legend" have as epitome, more than another one Conquistador, the face of Hernán Cortés.
Hernán Cortés portrait
      The chapter dedicate to the "Black Legend" by José Ignacio Lago in his book is worthy to reflexion. I bring here because this reflexion is one of my main cornerstone boost that lead to this project. Together with the fact that I've live in Spain for a while and come to the knowledge of their people, their culture, their richness history... Understand this and love it light the flame that propel this project beside other more of which I've mention in previous post.
Hernán Cortés banner detail concept for TENOCHTITLAN©
      I want we can understand to Cortés and his men, away from stereotypes and old bitterness. Look at him as a men of his epoch, the XVIth century, and WHY of his actions. Uncover more about the Conquest by itself and that facts unknown for us and that make up the crucial elements which allow the defeat of the Aztec Empire.
