The Aztec Warrior, Sketches / Guerreros Aztecas, Bocetos

I show you now several mexica warrior sketches and notes focus on the militar attire with some civil dress of high rank captains and generals. This are some testies to take contact with its iconic representation. This drawings are inspired on Osprey publication illustrations but too on the mexica codex Matricula de Tributos 1 made in 1520-1530, and on others bibliographic and iconographic sources.
Matrícula de Tributos (Tribute Roll)

In this image we can see some warrior suits or tlahuiztli, shields and helmets tributed by vassal towns to Mexico-Tenochtitlan. The rectangles below show severals tilmatli (cloack) designs.

1. The Matrícula de Tributos (Tribute roll) is a 16th-century mexica codex listing the tribute paid by the various tributaries of the Aztec Empire. The codex show hundreds of tribute glyphs listed in it. It's considered an important document in learning about Nahuatl and Aztec culture, mathematics, governance, economy and geography.

The Aztecs / Los Aztecas

No less effort, dedication and study entails the Aztecs characterization. Even more due to all the complexity, symbolism, dress details, civilian or militar, of that great and brave people.

For this, obviously, I must to study and get information about aztecs uses and customs. So I got a lot of books about the Aztecs as I can to have visual references and knowledges concerning to them.

As the Castillians case I took my first recreation references from the Osprey publishing books /Angus McBride illustrations; "Aztec, Mixtec and Zapotec Armies", "Aztec Warrior" and "The Conquistadores" publications.
Angus McBride illustration for "The Conquistadores"
Angus McBride illustration for "Aztec, Mixtec and Zapotec Armies"
In them I found  various kind of information as military ranks, logistic, weapons materials, battle tactics, and so many things that come to seem innecesary to draw but to me, and for a historical recreation work, It is because through this knowledge I can get a master that allow me to put parameters to choice and assign this or that atrezzo to each plot character.

Between all my books I must to stand out the Esther Pasztory "Aztec Art". Its a thick and brainy

study, very well illustrated, where the author deal several aztec art subjects as imagery, symbolism, art materials, architecture, featherwork, sculpture, ceramic, and historical and social background. By her diagrams and explanations I get an useful knowledge about aztecs glyphs, signs, symbols and emblems to the point that I can recognise and understand them in the way that I can use them to assign one symbol or glyph to that or whom character according to its role in the plot. For example for the Cuauhtlahuac (Cuitláhuac) ornaments and cloak (tilmatli), the suspicious and disagree Motecuhzoma's brother, choice symbols, emblems and glyphs that portray his personality;
Cuauhtlahuac character study; we can see the Movement glyph in the medallion design. At left: cloak or tilmatli design.

the Movement glyph because his character is more resolved and ready to take the arms with no doubt than his brother Motecuhzoma who show off the Feather Serpent  emblem (nobilty symbol) and the Solar Disc (as he is the God in earth), the guide and emperor of all Anahuac and subject to the common well.
Motecuhzoma character study. Top right the tiara mosaic design. Below bracelet with Feather Serpent motif

The Aztecs, whom more correctly gentilic is the Mexica, had a rigid stratify society pyramid where at the top was the emperor or Hueytlatoani follow by the noblemen and the priests where we find too the Eagle and Jaguar Warriors, and other high rank captains; the trademen or pochtecas; the working-class or macehualtin; and the tlatacoltin or slaves.

From the noblemen to top the matter is complicate contrary to the macehualtin or slaves whom was more simple in their clothes, with no ornaments and shoes.
Angus McBride illustration; clockwise: nobleman;
a farmer; and macehual woman

The pipiltin or noblemen... well, you can imagine; feather headdress, condecorations, thoundsand ornament, pattern tunics, cloaks, crowns and tiara (tlatoani xiuhuitzolli), precious sandals, gold and greenstones, complex banner and insignias, feather cloaks, fur and jade, mosaics... So I have a big work before me...

Y como en el caso castellano una de las primeras fuentes visuales fueron las colecciones de Osprey publishing con McBride a la cabeza.* "Los Ejércitos Aztecas, Mixtecas y Zapotecas", "Guerreros Aztecas" y "Los Conquistadores" son mis libros de cabecera tanto por sus ilustraciones como por la información sucinta sobre otros detalles que las ilustraciones no ofrecen pero que es necesario saber;
Ilustración de Angus McBride, "The Conquistadores"

Es un grueso estudio, muy concienzudo y de fácil comprensión, y bien ilustrado, donde se tocan aspectos varios sobre la imaginería, simbolismo, materiales, arquitectura, arte plumario, trasfondo histórico y socio-cultural, de los aztecas. Sus diagramas y explicaciones me han ayudado  a comprender el significado de ciertos glifos, signos, símbolos y emblemas recurrentes en la iconografía azteca hasta el punto de ya reconocerlos a simple vista y entenderlos lo que me permite aplicarlos a este o cual diseño con un significado de acuerdo a tal o cual personaje; sus adornos y la iconografía que elija dependiendo del carácter del personaje. Por ejemplo para los adornos y manto (tilmatli) de Cuauhtlahuac (Cuitláhuac), el hermano desconfiado e inconforme de Moctezuma, elegí símbolos, emblemas y glifos que denotaran su carácter y papel en la historia;

En sentido del reloj; noble azteca;
campesino; y mujer macehual. Angus McBride

Atrezzo II: The Armors / Atrezzo II: Armaduras

Regarding to armors, in XVth century last years , it tends to a most light use wearing not the complete pieces rather just the called three-quarter armor.
Three-quarter armor. Illustration by Pablo Outeiral
This evolution due to the necessity to became more agile to ride horses and get more manoeuvrability and speed in the battlefront. And if we add the Caribbean weather factor and the Indigenous offensive capacity the armor manage without pieces little by little.
Those men who can pay a complete armor, the noblemen of course, wearing the full three-quarter armor, being the Maximilian style the most expensive.
Maximilian armor style used as reference for a comic carácter
They wear helmets of all kind; complete cuirass (breast plate and backplate); fauld and tassets to protect the low abdomen; gorget and bevors to protect the neck; arm harness and cuisses to arm and legs which can change for a more simples vembrace and leather high-boots respectively. To complete the equipment they used shields of two kind: Spanish buckler style (rodela) or the so called adarga (a hide shield the Spaniards inherited from the Moor).

Armor equipment; helmets, undergarment, cuirass and shields. Illustration by Adam Hook, Osprey Publishing

According to Martín Gómez, with so much reason, the horsemen at the New World have no rivals similar to them so they begging to do without of the European style armor and use the lighter Mesoamerica Indian quilted cotton armor. But to my Conquista adaptation graphic novel, and in spite of the Caribbean and Tropic heat that suffocate my captains, I keep them with the three-quarter armor for a few reasons:
a) To distinguish them  from the rest of the troop and portray they nobility, horseman and high military rank nature.
b) To symbolize each captain psyche character through the design and style of the armor.
c) For it amazing look.

Study for captain Juan Velázquez de León with three-quarter armor
From the other side, the infantry, the poors one, will represent the best that evolution and adaptation to the environment and climate than their captains. Many of them can't purchase the complete equipment. Some get it by good luck in the gamble, by "inheritance" when some of their partners die in the battlefield or by bounty in the Italian Wars. All wear helmets of all type although I made the soldiers dress up the more simples, and the indispensable iron gorgets to protect from decapitations.
Example of a soldier with the ichcahuipilli (quilted cotton armor), a iron buckler shield, gorget and cabacete
They wear a half-cuirass, just the breast plate. Another one wear complete cuirass with or without tassets. And little more. Subsequently all will wear the famous ichcahuipilli, the Indian quilted cotton armor. It will appear over the soldiers after the Potonchan battle against the Mayan. This is a logic decision because this cotton piece was more accessible to all of them.
This element help me to distinguish the soldiers one from another and put the limits to the atrezzo at the time to draw and design them, in another way I'll be crazy!

Studies for a simple soldier just with breast plate, helmet and adarga shield, and Alvarado complete three-quarter armor
And the swords... The captains carry sword and dagger. The infantry too, mainly the swordsman. The nobleman shows a more elaborate sword design according to his personality.   The soldiers manage well with more simple swords but this is another chapter...

Armadura: brigantina, cascos, coraza y escudos. Ilustración por Adam Hook. Osprey publishing

Atrezzo II: Between Medieval and Renaissance / Atrezzo II: Entre lo Medieval y el Renacimiento

To give a real look to Cortés, and his men, I must to be a master in the fashion matter. It is important because if I going to design the characters clothes I need to know how that people use to wear. The quest will be infinite but with the help of Pablo Martín Gómez's book I get the tools to discriminate the visual references. And this quest lead me to Toledo to visit  the Museo del Ejército (Army Museum).
Puerta Nueva de Bisagra, Toledo, Spain
Museo del Ejercito banner (Army Museum)
To my disappointment  there no allow pictures of any kind inside the museum. So if I want some image from the collection pieces  I need take note of the item ID number and request them  via email and then they will send me copies by PO BOX prior payment.

Museum collection armor pieces
But I no found pieces from the epoch which concern me so this quest  become no useful although always is a pleasure visit Toledo. Therefore I go back to internet and my books (Osprey editions and Martín Gómez's book) and start to design based on them.
According to this author the Cortés men "are the second generation" of castillians who arrive to the Caribbean; "most of them from farmers family" and very poor. I must to keep this factor present at the moment to dress them up because most of them have no money to buy a simple sword.
Adam Hook clothing illustration for Osprey publishing "The Conquistadores" wrote by John Pohl
Leather original doublet or jerkin
The fashion "was between medieval and Renaissance style" so we going to see many leather  and cloth doublet over wide sleeve shirts. Buttons no exist so they used cords and ribbons. "The legs was covered with hose,  complete or  half-leg", with one or two colors as the Italian style.  Half-leg Moorish boots or tall to protect the thigh of the horse rider. In the begging of the Conquest the infantry used a common leather shoes but lather change it for the indigenous sandals.
For the caps we have the "coif", the hoods and berets. The nobleman used plumes as decoration.
If the stabbed sleeves and shorts  begging to be use in that epoch its most probable that  it style arrive late to the Caribbean.
The traditional Conquistador look

My Conquistador look: private outer garment and undergarment; nobleman with Morish boots and doublet
For this reason I no use this fashion element in my characters as I've explain widely in previous posts.

                                                                                ***
