Gonzalo de Sandoval Banner / Banner de Gonzalo de Sandoval
According to chroniclers, and leading by the carácter behaviour and psyche depicted in that sources, I imagine Gonzalo de Sandoval with a wide chin and round shapes, softbearded, small eyes and almost tenders, given that he arrive to Mexico very younger although we can see in them a strong will too, which became developed over the expedition. He wear Brown straight hair, without care, short, as beggining to use then given to all the figure a round, soft but strong look, combination of youth and strength.

At now we have Gonzalo de Sandoval as full cavalry captain, experienced proven in the battlefield and ruler of the Vera Cruz colony as major sheriff.
But will not be after his fire proof in the battle of the Toltec bridges and that of Otumba when he will looks like the illustration below; the three quarter armour, a simple burgonet helmet, new couple of boots and gloves, and a new sword. He prefer the arms free of steel, just like the legs, wearing only the necessary to protect himself showing with this his characteristic sobriety.
I design this armour based in some existent models but giving a particular form accorcding to the character psyche. This armour is formed by simple, round and strong pieces, no ornaments nor embossings, imitating the fofrm of a build muscular body, typical of a man grown in the farm work and horse tamer, simple and some basic personality, forceful and orthodox as we can see in the chronicles descriptions. In the same way I develop some studies about the dresses he wear under armour. Considering that Sandoval was promote in rank his clothes show this particular in the same way.

Sandoval and the Castillian Command Chain II / Sandoval y la Cadena de Mando Castellana II
As I mentioned before the Cortés's "army" no was an army as we know today. However, as appointment Fernando Redondo Díaz, this kind of expeditions was not "military undertaking (...)[; the] expeditions was not warlike. Their goal not was fight and the castillian soldier do not hooked to go to war. The war was an venture circumstantial element and not as part of itself."
This no military aspect of the american spaniards expeditions make so irregular the command chain in comparison with the coronelías (companies) that was appearing in Spain in that time as an organic unity inside the incipient army concept. As well we talk of transitions in the fashion and weaponry, this occur too in the organization of the castillian host; from the capitanía concept to that of tercios.
The expeditions had as goal the trading with the natives, rescue goods and shipwreck survivors, and the exploration of the lands. This is the cause that the Cortés's "compaña" (company) have an improvise and irregular look; he gather a broad contingent of men, horses and artillery just to... exchange glasses and mirror for gold? Theres no be a infrastructure which define this group of men; neither army nor explorers; both and nothing at the same time.
After the Centla Battle and the foundation of Villa Rica de la Vera Cruz (Veracruz) Cortés and his men went inside of the country. Settled in Cempoala, a totonac city near the Mexico Gulf, the general captain, having to back to the coast, "order to Pedro de Alvarado that keep charge of the army that was there (...), and togheter with him to Gonzalo de Sandoval, whom already demostrated himself as earnest man, as always was. This was the first charge he had Sandoval."
From here to forward Sandoval begginig to scale inside the simple spaniard commad chain. Probably was designated horseman already in Cempoala. In Tlaxcala, and when they enter in Tenochtitlan, Sandoval riding beside the others captains as Alvarado, Ávila, Lugo, Olid and Velázquez de León. The chronicles and scholars no leave clear if he already had the captain rank in that moment or when exactly it give to him. Nevertheless, in the boards meetings during they first stay in Tenochtitlan, we can see Sandoval among the must trustworthy men of the General Captain. Such was the case that in certain moment Cortés send him to arrest the alguacil mayor (sheriff) of Veracruz and send him back carried in chains, and occupy his charge. We deduce of this behaviour a relationship of loyalty and friendship where the trusting and aptitude take a important role in the moment to designate captains.
As horseman, and late as captain, Gonzalo de Sandoval changed his garments to that required in this cavalry section. According to Martín Gómez the "horsemen wearing a varied armament depending of their preferences and economic resources." The armour was obligated in some way considering that by itself had an important psychological meaning in adition of its protective advantage and social disticntion. Although this armours can be transform in real ovens by the sun "the Cortés's men was hard people (...) accustomed to the torrid Castilla, Andalucia or Extremadura plateau summers."
Nevertheless the lightening of the armour was usual to "get more speed and agility" although keep their knight look and stand out from the rest of the troop. For these, and according to Martín Gómez, the hidalgos (noblemen) keep wearing the heavy armet of past times. But as I mentioned in the Cortés post "mine" captains prefer the burgonet helmets, for a esthetic reasons, giving unity to the captains división. Sandoval, nevetheless, wear a cabacete similar to that he used before. This is because I want to give a transition sensation; he is no yet a captain but a horseman, he ride beside the captains and hidalgos of the army, and have the most absolut confidence of Cortés.
"To protect the body [...] they using the cuirass. This consist of two pieces, the breastplate and the back plate, joined by belts and steel hooks. From the cuirass hunged the tassets, that protect the abd [and the thighs]. (...) they complete their protection with the gorget that cover the neck (...) [and] the vambraces, wearing plates only at the outside of the arms. The horseman can wear steel gauntlet but was more usual they substitute it for the more light leather gloves." The legs was the more vulnerable part in a enemy infantry attack so they used poleyn, cuisse y greave, although ouwn Sandoval, a man of limited resources, choose the "strong moorish leather boots", either up until the thigh, specially when he ride, or fallen.
He complete his panoply with his buckler getting in Centla, his regular sword until now, this new italian "ear dagger", probably a gift, and a light spear (adapted to the "monta a la jineta" style of ride) appropiate to the cavalry and which that they charged and smash throughout the enemies ranks.

Sandoval and the Castillian Command Chain / Sandoval y la Cadena de Mando Castellana
We must consider that, before all, the Cortés's "army" was not exactly an army. Fernando Redondo Díaz indicate that the "Cortés's host inner composition is hard to understand by its own simplicity" because they was just more than 500 castillians amongst sailors, scribes, carpenters, doctors, blacksmith, etc.
This meagre military squad was divided in capitanías (companies) of one hundred men each although we know that Cortés had 11 captains, noblemen , at the start of the expedition. We can conclude then, although this military force was organized under Ferdinad the Catholic's ordenanzas (ordinace) of 1496, the command chain was very simple; from the infatry to captain and from there to General Captain.
After the Centla battle againts the chontal mayans Gonzalo de Sandoval is not promotioned, despite his bravery and fearlessness because, according to Díaz del Castillo, "was a lad then [and] he no was apt to command [...] until we saw him grow up in that way [...]."
The illustration show us Gonzalo de Sandoval after the first contact with the Mesoamerican indians. Evidence of this is that he changed his worn-out gambeson for a ichcahuipilli, the renamed quilted cotton mexica armour. If we look he had changed too his cutarras for a new pair of Mesoamerican sandals. This adaptation is inherent of this kind of cultural contact but are more. Martín Gómez point out tha the castillians adopted this piece, the ichcahuipilli, because its "more comfortable and cheap [...] and properly against the indians weapons, mainly the arrows and the darts. No overwhelming by the weight nor heat by the sun [...] and easy to change if it rip."
This pieces can obtained by war booty, pillaging to casualty on the fields, or like defeated tribute, as was usually among the indigenous themselves. It use spread among the troop during the Conquest because the kind of war of the indians made useless the european metal armours.
Nevertheless many keep using the metal gorgets and helmets because in a hand to hand combat the posibility to be beheaded by a macahuitl or be reached by a arrow existed yet. For that own Gonzalo de Sandoval keep his iron gorget and cabacete adding a metal buckler instead his hide adarga. Maybe he obtained this shield from a fallen arm mate or as present by prove during the Centla Battle that he was more than a horsekeeper.

Sandoval: from Foot Soldier to Captain / Sandoval: de Infantería a Capitán
Considering the Pablo Martín Gómez's book "Hombres y Armas en la Conquista de México" ("Men and weapons in the Conquest of Mexico), by its clarity and synthesism, I'll describe the varied stages throughout a Conquistador goes to became from foot soldier to a captain. And what better example than the character Gonzalo de Sandoval. He was the younger of Cortés foot soldiers, according to Bernal, the most loyal, valiant, humble and upright.
With a dark born he only can took part of a troop compound by "the long-suffering infantry men. Braves, meagers, tough and trained, [...] the real spinal column of the Conquest."
Divided in three sections, the pikemen, swordmen and arquebusier/crossbowmen, Gonzalo de Sandoval maybe was part of the swordmen (with sword and buckler or adarga) because was the most cheap aquipment of all, because he was a "good horseman" and was one of the horse-managers at the start of the campaign .

Even so many no have how to pay the basic equipment and must to manage well as they can. Such is the case of the use of brigandine, " a sturdy piece of leather were between its layer placed little pieces of steel fixed with rivets." Although that, as God's will, I decided dress Sandoval no with a brigandine otherwise with a gambeson (more cheap even and sure inherited from his father) which he remove the sleeves to get more fresh (we must to consider that he is at the Caribbean in the early 1519), and more convenience to use the sword.
Beneath this piece Sandoval wear, as many other men of its epoch, and adapted to the Caribbean islands weather, clothes "straddling between the Medieval and the Renaissance." They wear shirts with roll up sleeve or until the wrist over which they put doublets; "made in cloth o leather, very populars by its useful to stop the stabs. The buttons are not spread yet so the garments was fasten with cords or bows. The leg was covered with hoses, entire or until the knees" as wear our Sandoval, always practical and meager. And like a poor man he use separate hoses, tie to a cord belt with laces.
Is usual see soldiers with whole leg hose wearing one lose and the other tie or up rise as in the next image. This was a ancient medieval country people custom; when the heat become intensified they release one of the hose which hang from the knee "letting to see the thigh", and the shorts even!
In the time of the Conquest the men wear "leather shoes which become worn-out by the use. Then, to replace, the soldiers take the "alpargatas", its mean, the Mesoamerican native sandals [...]." Although I decided that Sandoval wear a poor "cutarras" or leather knitting sandals.
At the start of the journey Sandoval looks like this, and protect with the gambeson and such pieces acquire in the Cortés camp, since they no can purchase the full equipment by themself was minimum indispensable that all the troop wear helmets and gorgets. My Sandoval wear a steel gorget fasten to the gambesón with a cord, under which we can see two scapular, and a simple medieval cabacete.
Beside the tatty leather belt is his sword, "the antonomastic weapon of the spanish Conquistador, as if was a foot soldier as if was a horseman, nobleman or lower-class man [...]". The sword, in the first years of the Conquest, was in a "profound change process", from the XVth century to the more complex and refine cup hilt, and lighten of the blade, in the middles XVIth century.

The Brave Castillian / El Valeroso Castellano
"And the captain Gonzalo de Sandoval was very courageous captain, and he was till twenty and four years old when he came over here [...]; was not too tall in body and height, but well proportioned and burly, the chest high and wide, and the same the back, and with legs some bow-legged, and a very good rider, and the face seems to some stronger, [...] he no was [...] greedy rather to get fame and to be a good corageous captain [...] he no wears riches garments rather was very humble [...] for whom the marquis Cortés said to His Majesty from all braves soldiers he got beside him [...] he can be counted amongst the more renowned in the world..."

True History of the Conquest of Nueva España
In the creative act, and recreative, of a historic character the artist must to choose what elements and features of that character strengthen to visually develop and portray. This creative exercise is show perfectly with the quote above depicting the captain Gonzalo de Sandoval; from the full text I just only take the depicting parts that help me to portray visually the physical and moral attributs which turn Sandoval on one of the most loyal, brave and upright captain under Hernán Cortés command.
From my chronicle readings I get a mental vision of how must look Gonzalo de Sandoval throughout his beheavior, acts and words. From this impressions I made this sketches and pencils of this young castillian captain.

The Eagle Warrior Banner / Banner del Guerrero Águila
Finally I show you the Eagle Warrior banner design that is the final stage in the recreation concept character process. Below attach the Isabel Bueno Bravo quote about this brave warriors.
"Is no doubt this is the most archetypical aztec warrior, paradoxically, despite of this, is the less portrayed of all [ in the mexica iconagraphy codices], maybe due to its own exclusiveness since over their quilted cotton armour wearing a feathered suit. This feathers was a luxury good very exclusive of a few priviliged that can use it after the emperor authorization."

The Aztec Eagle Warrior / El Guerrero Águila Azteca
Well here are the complete coloured Eagle Warrior. It suppose an interesting process because I think use the traditional palette based on that of the mexica códices and actual illustrations first but at the end that range of colours not convinced me so I decided to start again using a new palette, more actual, logic and personal...
First we have the tlahuitztli. This part of the uniform was usually show in yellow ochre but that tone don't like at all when I saw put over the figure. So I think that if the tlahuitztli was made with the feathers of the mexican Golden Eagle this must be painted with the tones of it feathers. By the way I took a Golden Eagle picture and use the color range of this bird of prey to give colour to this character; a kind of toast-colored earth. The result was satisfactory to me.
In the same way the wing arms, the helmet feathers and its colors show the same tones and treatment of that of the tlahuitztli.
To the macahuitl I'd choose the colours based on previous illustrations and iconographics references and use obsidian little slabs pictures too. The club design is simple, no decorations and ornaments. This weapon is tie to the wrist with a crimson cord ended in tassels similar to that on the chest of the warrior which fasten the banner reed harness at his back. This colour combination in part was inspired in some samurai japanesse armours.
The same criterion was used to choose the colour tones of the cords that fasten the vambrace matching with the bracelets interwine volutes and edges which are in gold. This braceletes are attached to a leather strips which are tie to the vambrace. In similar assembly is the wristband with a turquoise mosaic. This wristband and the another on the left arm, which is made with jadeite stone, inlaid coral and gold, wear gold sleigh bells. Over the hand guard we can see a solar motif made in silver and golden silver.
The helmet is made on painted wood with gold leaf over the beak, the eyebrow and the nape edge. The eyes are on obsidian and coral with the below edge with turquoise mosaic. The rays which come from below the eyes are in silver. On the nape the feather are real eagle feathers although more redish than the rest of the suit. He wear jade stone earflaps, gold and turquoise, completed with two big gold pendants and sleigh bells. The collar are in turquoise, jade and gold pieces with greenstone inlay and beads.
The maxtlatl (loincloth) finishing is made with crimson and black thread with some inlay of gold. The kneepad are black painted wood with silver studded. The legs, imitating the eagle legs, are covered with quilted cotton and over them be gold greaves tie with dark blue cords.
To finish the sandals (cactli) follows the previous illustrations and iconogrphic documentation references just that I enrich them with some details with greenstone and gold. It was made with maguey or yecotl fibre, reed and red or white cotton cover.

Recreating The Eagle Warrior V / Recreando a los Guerreros Águila V
Well, with this clay model ready, I start to do the Eagle Warrior head and figure studies.
In this way I can do several angles of the helmet with a more solid shape and true delineation, and not just based on imaginative descriptions.
With this study I development the complete figure including the atrezzo; breastplate, greaves, vambrace, bracelet, collars, pendants, maxtlatl and the weapons from which I show you a few ones.
Below we have three figure studies showing severals military ranks inside the Eagle Warrior Order according to my vision of them.
General. This rank show a more elaborate suit with a big feather shoulder pad. The plume have another kind of feather which sprout from the quetzal fetaher group to four different directions. Behind the helmet, originating from the nape, we can see the two like folded paper fan, similar to the andesite shead sculpture noted in previous post; over the chest the figure wear a gold breastplate based on some goldsmithing pieces from that which survived from the pillaging. For the rest of the breastplate designs I used as reference codex images and figures, and some imagination.
The greaves are based on some illustrations that probably have no archeological support but is a interesting element that seek imitate the eagle legs. With this purpouse I'd take as reference the samurai's armour greaves that, in another way, I noticed several similarity in some uniform elements as the use of sandals in both armies, banners on the back (made in paper or fabrics), the use of cords to fix their armor pieces, and fabrics sash to the waist.
Captain. Their tlahuiztli or suit is a less little bit elaborate than that of the generals although show shoulder pad too. Their plume is only with quetzal feathers and their breastplate is on wood covered with a greenstone mosaic and gold .This captain, and the general before, bear the tepoztopilli; a kind of spear with obsidian blades that was a hand to hand combat weapon more than a throwing one. The warrior demostrated a great skill and courage in the battlefront with this weapon, and much experience in war so I give it to this two ranks in the military command chain as a distinctive weapon.
Both warriors wear the macahuitl o club beside the thigh tied with leather cord around the waist as a flint knife on the right leg too. Next to this draw we can see a couple of maxtlatl or loincloth-end design which complexity is according to the rank of their wearer.
Standarbearer, officials and soldiers. This pencil draw below is the most common Eagle Warrior representation. Is the simplest version of the order soldier; he no wear plume because the banner he carry on their back because this element is no viable on a standbearer. As standbearer he wear sleighbells on the bracelets to make easy the recognition and trasmition of command to the troop.
This bracelets was made on leather and covered with greenstone mosaics on the right arm and jadeite stones or chalchihuites on the left. This rank have units that no wear plume even when they no carry banners on their back. The figure above tie the banner on their chest and uprise his macahuitl attached to his wrist.
All decoratives elements and design are based on mexica designs and patrons taked from the Pasztory`s, book, and codices, and adapted to the differents parts and details of the uniform.
Now we going to ink one of this models and develop the character.

All decoratives elements and design are based on mexica designs and patrons taked from the Pasztory`s, book, and codices, and adapted to the differents parts and details of the uniform.
Now we going to ink one of this models and develop the character.
