Comics I

The consulted documentation for this graphic novel included, on the same time that the history and academic texts, previous references about the Conquest in another kind of genre; the comic book. In my Web searching I run into with someone that already were deal with the theme of the conquest of Tenochtitlán. And the most peculiar, more for its format than its content, was the mythical North American Classics Illustrated comic series.
The number 156, "The Conquest of Mexico“ , is based on Bernal Díaz del Castillo  memoirs and published in the fifties of the last century by Strato Publications Ltd for United Kingdom with permission of the Gilberton  Company Inc. Its cover with that epic air, its oldie age patina, its dynamic composition and its pulp like figures with tanned skin called my attention.
The version I have is in full color and nice drawing. Its Cortés wear a burgonet helmet and Motecuhzoma a gold diadem. The recreation of that age is quite correct, the artist has been documented and his mixture of simplicity with some good details and the handling of the masses is successful. The script, with lot of captions in order to help  the narration, summary the great history in 44 pages. The text is completely based on the “Historia Verdadera“ wrote by the soldier under Cortés orders and who participated for himself in the conquest of Mexico and in his old age put on words his experiences showing-off a prodigious memory. This fact make this comic become partial and ilustrative, without another objective that to be a educational to young people, as usually happens in many cases when the conquest, and other historical subjects, are dealed as we will see in the following one.
Two pages from the Classic Illustrated: The Conquest of Mexico, Bernal Díaz del Castillo
This time we go to Spain with Ediciones Toray, S.A. and its collectable Famous Men: "The Great Adventure of Hernán Cortés “ with script of Eugene Sotillos and the art of Antonio Borrell, there in the sixties.
Change the style of the cover, in line with the time; simple and right forms, modern and synthetic, just like the inner illustrations. It is a rare piece also, a collectible one, whose version I have is in simple monochrome blue. Like in the classic movies his Motecuhzoma is a Caucasian wearing plume, James Stewart resemblance, and dark painted skin, I suppose, and the Castilians dressing stabbed sleeves and trousers as in the XVIth century second half fashion. This detail reaffirm the everlasting image of the Castilian conquerors even in our days.
This version of 8,5 " x 6 " and carry out in 64 pages also offers a summary to us of which was the Conquest on a free version on texts of Cortés and  Díaz del Castillo with interesting turns and a prise, hopeful, positive and progressive end.

The strange Cortés helmet and the strange look of this Motecuhzoma are very curious

Summarized version from 1981 is this collectible Heroes, Discovery of the World: "Hernán Cortés in Mexico“published by Librairie Larousse/F. Planeta, S.A. The story begins with the Castilian victory over the Mayans on Potonchan in 1519. With script of François Lambert and drawings of Carlo Marcello the narration are develop by a scenes succession with illustrations whose go with brief texts in fast time jumps helped by the captions; for the few pages  that it have (22 p) the scriptwriter made a true miracle.

“El Dorado” (1988) is a film directed by spaniard film director, photographer and writer Carlos Saura wich I view in the nineties and became a model to follow at the moment to conceive this enormous project.

Saura is able to break with that iconographic mosaic of hieratics Conquistadores portraits who I had spoken before. He shows to us the last Conquistadores in search of adventures and gold through length, slow and winding Amazon river treating to imitate the first Castilian adventurers who conquered the two metropolis of America at the first half of XVIth century; Tenochtitlan and Cuzco.

And he achieve it via the slow, paused down and suffocating rythm of this films evoking on us this river catching to us in his equally suffocating atmosphere that drowns and make sick. The armors are corroded, the fabrics become withered, the powder becomes damp, the wood rots and the spirits are heated until exploding in violent episodes of blood that increase in virulence and bitterness until the senseless that hits us showing the other face of the Conquest little known.

“El Dorado” is a demystification without anything of the epic elements that characterized the previous Conquistadores before Pedro de Ursúa and his mens.

For that reason this films is a reference to me; for the first time I saw come to life the portraits of the conquerors with its red bands of rank and their crimson plumes. Nevertheless there are no memorable battles, there are no native civilizations that to admire, no heroic gestures nor renowned personages, just a handful of men, most with doubtful reputation, envoys to a mission of which it was expected did not leave with life, in the middle of an infinite forest and river.

And it is that the subject of the conquest seems not to have much attractive. And I consider this from the artistic, creative and visual point of view. Although the Anglo-Saxons seem interested in our Latin American history (as much in literary production as cinematographic, perhaps due to the “Spanish Black Legend " as first motivation) the Latin Americans seem not to want. Saura do it from a critical position with visionary dyes (the Lope de Aguirre's  rebellion evokes the future buds of Creole independence) but little it has been made that contains a good budget because the thematic wear implicit a good investment.

The money rules and who have give orders and dictates the norms. So, of the English-speaking side or nonCastilian language we have films like “ Captain from Castile” (1947),

“Aguirre, the Wrath of God " (1972) by Werner Herzog, “1492: The conquest of the Paradise " (1992) by Ridley Scott and “Apocalypto” (2006), in addition to other smaller films or animation films than I am not going to mention. With greater or smaller budget, or greater or smaller fortune, these films touch the subject of the encounter of two worlds more than the fact o the Conquest itself. Few recreate the pre-Hispanic world; “Apocalypto” just shows us a couple of pyramids/temple.

Nevertheless “The Captain from Castile” it rather shows something more and done well in relation to the image of native although with certain innocent and contemplative look. However, if in these films their “Conquistadores” are enough good regarding the atrezzo (although always we see them in suits of "stabbed" trousers and sleeves and the everlasting morrión) the native ones follow within their standardized parameters of which I spoke in the introduction to this blog; innocents, unprotected almost idyllic and in loincloths.

And on this matters does not escape the Saura's movie too nor the other films about the Conquest now in Spanish Castilian language side. Thus we have   the peculiar one “Cabeza de Vaca" (1990) by Nicholas Echevarría, “ The Other Conquest " (1998) by Salvador Carrasco and more recently “Even the Rain " (2011) by Icíar Bollaín. Works that in their productions are more interesting as film and artistic work. These are reflections, critics films, made with good taste and with another much more interesting vision and outside the commercial mainstream as the previous ones except for the Herzog's film that it connects more with these ones than with the others.
With greater or smaller budgets these films just reach, as I said, the encounter of both worlds but from the periphery, not the fact in itself; the first moment, the military shock of the first wave of Conquistadores and all the epic element that it imply as much to one part as to the other; that of the great native civilizations of America that, from a visual, artistic and narrative point of view, would be worth to see take presence and bring to life.

I must remark that there is a 2007 film which I don't view yet nor knew that existed: “Eréndira the indomitable" directed by Juan Carlos Mora Cattlet and mybe will be interesting to watch. Here the trailer.
