The "Black Legend"... / La "Leyenda Negra"...

      The Conquest, of the Americas in general, by the sword, apart from that of the Church, another conquest in itself, was distorted just after its beginning by something that still living among us, although centuries has been passed over. I mean the "Spanish Black Legend". As J. L. Lago affirm, this legend born in France in the XVIth century first half as response against the Spain victories in Europe, in military as well the political aspects (Charles I was elected emperor before Francisco I for example). Another contribution to this legend come from Las Casa (1474-1566) as well his work was praiseworthy we can't deny that he no doubt to "invent [and inflate] facts that, telling with great vehemence, become ammunition" for the Spain enemies.

      This legend has been like ink spread on paper reaching the Americas together with revolutionary ideas imported from Europe whom drive the independence movements in that continent, grasping in the hearts of people thirsting of emancipation. The rest no need commentary. Nevertheless I like to add that all that elements converge and configure the Conquistador archetypical look; scowling soldier, dense dark beard and morion, ruthless, cruel and cold, the image of evil itself. And all this elements in the "Black Legend" have as epitome, more than another one Conquistador, the face of Hernán Cortés.

      The chapter dedicate to the "Black Legend" by José Ignacio Lago in his book is worthy to reflexion. I bring here because this reflexion is one of my main cornerstone boost that lead to this project. Together with the fact that I've live in Spain for a while and come to the knowledge of their people, their culture, their richness history... Understand this and love it light the flame that propel this project beside other more of which I've mention in previous post.

      I want we can understand to Cortés and his men, away from stereotypes and old bitterness. Look at him as a men of his epoch, the XVIth century, and WHY of his actions. Uncover more about the Conquest by itself and that facts unknown for us and that make up the crucial elements which allow the defeat of the Aztec Empire.

      La Conquista, en general, la conquista  de América por las armas, no por la Fe, que esa es otra conquista, fue deformada casi inmediatamente después de ocurrida por algo que aun esta vivito y coleando entre nosotros aunque hayan pasado siglos. Me refiero a la "Leyenda Negra".  Esta leyenda, citando a J.L. Lago, nació en Francia muy a principios del siglo XVI debido a las victorias de España en Europa, tanto en lo militar como en lo político (Carlos I fue elegido emperador frente a Francisco I). Amén del aporte propio por parte de Las Casas (1474-1566) que si bien su labor no deja de ser encomiable no se puede negar que para conseguir sus buenos propósitos "no dudó en inventarse hechos [y cifras] que, narrados de manera vehemente, acabaron sirviendo como munición para los" enemigos de España.

      Pues esta leyenda ha sido como tinta esparcida sobre un papel absorbente que alcanzó a las Américas junto a las ideas revolucionarias, importadas, y que impulsaron la independencia de ese continente aferrándose en el corazón de los pueblos sedientos de emancipación. Y el resto no necesita comentario. Lo que si me gustaría añadir es que toda esta amalgama de cosas convergieron y configuraron una imagen del Conquistador por excelencia, el arquetipo de un soldado ceñudo, de tupida barba y morrión, despiadado, cruel y frío, vamos, ¡el mal absoluto! Y es que esta "Leyenda Negra" tiene como epítome de todo esto el rostro de Hernán Cortés, más que cualquier otro conquistador.

      El capítulo dedicado por José Ignacio Lago a la "Leyenda Negra" me parece digno de reflexión. Y lo traigo a colación ya que es una de las piedras angulares que me llevaron a este proyecto. Otra más fue vivir en España por tantos años y conocer mejor este país y su gente, su rica cultura e historia. Entender y amar esto encendió la llama  que me impulsa, aparte de otras consideraciones que ya he desvelado en anteriores entradas.

      Quiero que se entienda a Cortés y sus hombres, lejos de estereotipos y resentimientos. Entenderle como hombre de su época, el siglo XVI, y el por qué de sus acciones. Desvelar más sobre la conquista en sí misma y aquellos factores desconocidos para el gran público y que conforman los elementos cruciales que permitieron la derrota del Imperio Mexica.
