Well,
resuming my work I present you an additional main character in the plot of the
conquest, the emperor's brother, Cuauhtlahuac, better known as Cuitláhuac. Hugh Thomas
mentions him among the huey tlatoani advisers: "Moctezuma met again with his supreme
council. Among those present were, as usual, his brother Cuitláhuac, and his
nephew Cacama, king of Texcoco."

or Cuiltahuatzin (November 25, 1476-25 to November 28th, 1520) was lord of

His name in
Nahuatl means "Eagle on the Water.” Malinali, Cortés's interpreter, called
him Cuitlahuác and Bernal Díaz mentions him in his chronicle as Coadlabaca.
In my graphic novel, Cuauhtlahuac will play
an important role within a plot that will take the Castilians to the very
center of Tenochtitlan.
Cuauhtlahuac Concept Character pencils
Study for Cuauhtlauac and head |
Study for Cuauhtlahuac mantle or tilmatli |
Design for the lord of Iztapalapan personal trousseau |
As you can
see in each xiuhuitzolli (crown) of each Mexica lord, I have decided to put the glyph
of each lordship made of precious stones, jades, turquoises, coral and gold
inlays. In this case it corresponds to the glyph of Iztapalapan or Iztapalapa,
from where Cuauhtlahuac was Lord.
In the novel, Cuauhtlahuac is the
antagonist of his brother Motecuhzoma. The former is conservative, static,
eternal and the immovable faction of the Mexicas whereas Cuauhtahuac desires
change, defiance, a new form of government, for which reason among his
decorations appears the Mexica symbol of the movement; Ollin *.
For this new stage I have decided to try
inking the pencils digitally in hopes to save more time and at the same time to
experiment with new techniques. Below I leave you with a sample in progress in
search of your opinion ...
