“El Dorado” (1988) is a film directed by spaniard film director, photographer and writer Carlos Saura wich I view in the nineties and became a model to follow at the moment to conceive this enormous project.

Saura is able to break with that iconographic mosaic of hieratics Conquistadores portraits who I had spoken before. He shows to us the last Conquistadores in search of adventures and gold through length, slow and winding Amazon river treating to imitate the first Castilian adventurers who conquered the two metropolis of America at the first half of XVIth century; Tenochtitlan and Cuzco.

And he achieve it via the slow, paused down and suffocating rythm of this films evoking on us this river catching to us in his equally suffocating atmosphere that drowns and make sick. The armors are corroded, the fabrics become withered, the powder becomes damp, the wood rots and the spirits are heated until exploding in violent episodes of blood that increase in virulence and bitterness until the senseless that hits us showing the other face of the Conquest little known.

“El Dorado” is a demystification without anything of the epic elements that characterized the previous Conquistadores before Pedro de Ursúa and his mens.

For that reason this films is a reference to me; for the first time I saw come to life the portraits of the conquerors with its red bands of rank and their crimson plumes. Nevertheless there are no memorable battles, there are no native civilizations that to admire, no heroic gestures nor renowned personages, just a handful of men, most with doubtful reputation, envoys to a mission of which it was expected did not leave with life, in the middle of an infinite forest and river.

And it is that the subject of the conquest seems not to have much attractive. And I consider this from the artistic, creative and visual point of view. Although the Anglo-Saxons seem interested in our Latin American history (as much in literary production as cinematographic, perhaps due to the “Spanish Black Legend " as first motivation) the Latin Americans seem not to want. Saura do it from a critical position with visionary dyes (the Lope de Aguirre's  rebellion evokes the future buds of Creole independence) but little it has been made that contains a good budget because the thematic wear implicit a good investment.

The money rules and who have give orders and dictates the norms. So, of the English-speaking side or nonCastilian language we have films like “ Captain from Castile” (1947),

“Aguirre, the Wrath of God " (1972) by Werner Herzog, “1492: The conquest of the Paradise " (1992) by Ridley Scott and “Apocalypto” (2006), in addition to other smaller films or animation films than I am not going to mention. With greater or smaller budget, or greater or smaller fortune, these films touch the subject of the encounter of two worlds more than the fact o the Conquest itself. Few recreate the pre-Hispanic world; “Apocalypto” just shows us a couple of pyramids/temple.

Nevertheless “The Captain from Castile” it rather shows something more and done well in relation to the image of native although with certain innocent and contemplative look. However, if in these films their “Conquistadores” are enough good regarding the atrezzo (although always we see them in suits of "stabbed" trousers and sleeves and the everlasting morrión) the native ones follow within their standardized parameters of which I spoke in the introduction to this blog; innocents, unprotected almost idyllic and in loincloths.

And on this matters does not escape the Saura's movie too nor the other films about the Conquest now in Spanish Castilian language side. Thus we have   the peculiar one “Cabeza de Vaca" (1990) by Nicholas Echevarría, “ The Other Conquest " (1998) by Salvador Carrasco and more recently “Even the Rain " (2011) by Icíar Bollaín. Works that in their productions are more interesting as film and artistic work. These are reflections, critics films, made with good taste and with another much more interesting vision and outside the commercial mainstream as the previous ones except for the Herzog's film that it connects more with these ones than with the others.
With greater or smaller budgets these films just reach, as I said, the encounter of both worlds but from the periphery, not the fact in itself; the first moment, the military shock of the first wave of Conquistadores and all the epic element that it imply as much to one part as to the other; that of the great native civilizations of America that, from a visual, artistic and narrative point of view, would be worth to see take presence and bring to life.

I must remark that there is a 2007 film which I don't view yet nor knew that existed: “Eréndira the indomitable" directed by Juan Carlos Mora Cattlet and mybe will be interesting to watch. Here the trailer.

Get on with It / Manos a la obra

I seted out to finish the script in a year, thing that I obtained very well although nonfree of effort; after the job that pay  my invoices I arrived night at home and seated before the computer and write a few lines while I drew the miniatures.

These made on pencil on 5" x 4" paper where four pages of miniatures fitted that later I reviewed with ink in the job, between call and call, an came at home again and write more pages and to draw its respective miniatures with pencil and return to the work to review them with ink. And thus until concluding this part in the job so, step by step, it turnning titanic. Nevertheless this part was less complicated although in its moment I thought it was until the preproduction coming. Then know that this part will become more complex that the previous one, but we will not approach it now.

At the same time I read on the Aztecs, their culture, its customs, their Gods and their rites, their celebrations, their architecture and its ideology. And perhaps this part was most complex because there are more information about the Mayans, for example, or of such Conquistadores, than that who was defeated, in this case the Aztecs, in so many aspects. Its physical extermination as as much cultural, is a great emptiness that there is to fill with a few archaeological vestiges, technical comparative, partial Conquistadores and colonized stories, codices and texts, and much theory. But simultaneously it was the most interesting thing because in the way I need to create the psyche of the Aztecs I tried as possible as I could to understand to them, to put me in their mind, to try to see the world as they saw, the way they conceive the universe. Particularly effort was the  Moctecuhzoma Xocoyotzin character, the emperor of the mexica.

Why he acted as he acted? What restrained to the most powerful emperor of Mesoamerica and the Anahuac not to act with certainty against the Conquistadores who invaded their imperial territory?

This took me to found a book that helped to finish me molding the psyche of the Tenochtitlan Hueytlatoani: “Myth, pragmatism and imperialism, the social conscience in the conquest of the Aztec empire " by Tzvi Medin.

It was so I invented a reason that becomes one of the important plots of this comic and although it going besides the legends and what its says that was the cause of the “incapacity” of the mexica emperor I offer other arguments to support the paper of Moctecuhzoma within the argument. A reason based on real facts to which are add with a invented fact, but also possible fact, giving my humble point of view on the role that this gentleman play in the conquest of the most powerful and great city of Mesoamerica.

It is so I saw myself handling amount of information on as diverse subjects as extensive to be able to complete my script; encyclopedic to know terms of Nahuatl language, customs and old forms of the mexica (dressed, utensils and tools, names, hairdresses) and of the Castilians (although of these last ones I dominated a little more from before); contemporary sources to the events to articulate the sequences and facts;  and visuals and  cartographics sources to know by where to move to the protagonists, their geophysical country conditions and of fauna and flora, I mean, a great and conscientious labour that help me to finish this part of the work, (the script and the miniatures).

 ***

An Invitation / Una Invitación

At this point I think is necessary to make an appointment from the book “The Broken Spears” that has come to my memory and took in its moment as a personal invitation to me from part of this great Mexican historian.

“Who reads the present book will not be able to be less surprised when finding in the indigenous documentation countless passages, so dramatic and in certain way so plastic, that they seem an invitation to the artist, painter or sketcher, able to take them to the canvas or to the paper. “

Miguel Leon Portilla
THE BROKEN SPEARS

About Conquistadores and Defeated, a brief introduction II / Sobre conquistadores y conquistados, una breve introducción II.

Many years later, giving a stroll by the calle Real de Madrid, I found a little store specialized in military subjects. The cover of a book exposed in the showcase called my attention; “Hernán Cortés, the Conquest of Mexico, 1519-1521 " writing by Jose Ignacio Lago and illustrated by Dionisio Alvarez Cueto.

It is not necessary to say that I acquired and read it with avidity. Nor it is not necessary either to say that what there was narrated fascinated to me. There here the key and the resolute enigma! Although this just was the beggining of my own adventure , my own particular discovery. In my mind I recreates the fabulous city of Tenochtitlan, their bridges, their lagoon, their chinampas, their houses and their temples, their well made city grid, the handful of Spaniards who entered there, their fascination and greed, their confinement, their tricks, their fled! The fight for Tenochtitlan. To me it was as to read a book of adventures with hundreds visual and argumental possibilities. I flirt with the idea that someday it was put in images in the same way that I see in my mind while I read it. How had not been made this before? It was the germ of something would grow with time.

And it was after some brief time that I took the Passuth's novel “The God Rain cries on Mexico”.

And in spite of interesting of the story the author had not managed to evoke in my mind the images that I had conceived of the subject. To me it lack claw, force in certain passages which left in me the necessity to look for something more that covered that emptiness. The conquest of Mexico was becoming a fixation that I had to solve. But thanks to Passuth this impulse was fortified and it impelled to me to continue investigating.

Coming the Gibson's “Apocalypto” and the necessity to see the efforts of others recreating the ancient Mesoamérica, and its result, that I decided to make by myself that I was looking for. It was a call that had become a duty in a personal level. And even so they would not spend some years until I decided to buy a notebook and, pen in hand, take notes, annotations, make summaries, an organizational chart, organize chapters or subjects, and write the script of a six chapters graphic novel about the conquest of Mexico-Tenochtitlan.

Of course that before seating to write I had to investigate more and collect data. This was the reason that from “Apocalypto” to the moment to put to write spent some years. Years of crisis in many aspects. And very good things also. Other projects had arose in the way, orders, changes, trips… During this time I'd  browse in Internet looking for bibliography and information. And between these could not  leave out  the contemporary sources. For that reason I ordered the two volumes of SARPE publishing house Bernal Diaz del Castillo chronicle and the “Letters of Relation” written by Cortés himself, thing that was a discovery.

In the beginning I though just to keep a few versions and with this work on the text. But I realized that this will not enough, because each one constituted a very particular point of view and that if my intention were to be most impartial possible, and rigorous in equal measurement, to where it is allowed me and it been able, I'll needed to contrast the sources all the possible, not only from two ones, too from three, four, five, all points of view as I can in the way I get my own version of the Conquest.

In this way my library on the conquest was growing and growing. Fell texts as that of Hugh Thomas, Montoya de La Rica, Richard Lee Marks, Leon Portilla,  Internet articles, documentary, and even comics, and other documents that would be exhausting mention here. All these texts showed surprising things to me that did I not know happened in this conquest; unsuspected passages, anecdotal events but revealing, key episodes, incidents that never were had counted, in short, an amalgam of things that began to give other dyes to the summarized and prejudiced vision that I had about the conquest from both points of view; the one who was defeated and the one who vanquish.

I wanted to tell the conquest structuring the story as most dynamic as possible keeping close to the historical facts, without fantastic deflections, without added deforming elements as is usual in the comics genre to show that the history itself contains so many surprising and interesting elements, and entertained if it is wanted, that it does not need more. All this fortified me in the idea to take to term my comic book and show it to you like a graphic and divulging work. One thing is to read about the subject in an academic text and very different other is to see it in images. Therefore the script and the cartoons went expanding until arriving at twelve chapters from around 40/50 pages each one. And leaving many things outside!

***

¡Y dejando muchas cosas fuera!

About Conquistadores and Defeated, a brief introduction / Sobre conquistadores y conquistados, una breve introducción.

An image is worth more than thousand words. It is a cliche that sometimes is certain. And an
image that remain fixed in my retina, and my memory, was this; the Castilians catched within a sort
of walls outside which mexica warriors  advance in column brandishing their arms.

The image was part of a documentary one transmitted by the university television of Panama, my
country of origin. “The Spaniards were enclosed  and besieges within the Axayacatl's palace, without
water, without sufficient food, harassed day and night in rain of stones, darts, arrows and war
shouts". Or something thus was what narrated the voice in off accompanying this image. It is
impossible that I remember exactly what I listened; I was very kid, we are speaking of early nineties,
but that image and what illustrated was what it made an impression to me and leave me a mark.
It was a surprising revelation; listen words like "palace", "city", "walls" they did not fit with the
idea that I had of which they were the Indians in my own country; the idea that taught to us.
I was customary to see in text books, and the real life, quite simple and pacific natives, resigned
and until innocents. Their small villages are not cities and much less there were Stone palaces. In text
books of the school appeared the illustrations of the arrival of Chistopher Columbus to Guanahani
coast (San Salvador) been received by idyllic natives in loincloths approaching curious to the just
arrived with innocent air and a few arrows and arcs.

And the bust portraits of the conquerors that shows hieratic pretensions mens with dense beards,
elegant pose, invincibles, iconic look. How it was possible that natives in loincloths could corner the
Spaniards, who had more sophisticated arms, in… a palace? In a palace inside of a city in the middle
of a lake?

And what about Machu Picchu? It is certain that the renowned city, iconic like the pictures
of the Conquistadores, was a case aside. For me particularly I associated it to a separated religious
center in mountains, a enigma tie to “gods came from the sky ", and not to a people with a complex
culture. Come on, don't blame to me, was the result of how they taught our history to us; fast
and with anecdotal dyes. The important was to learn the dates and the things that happened in
it. And everything at very local level. And my attention in those years was focus on learn Painting
and the Middle East and Western Art.
Resume, that news contravened  my concept of to be conquered. To the concept that I had then, of
course. And simultaneously that revelation opened to everything a world of new sensations on the
matter. Fascinated to Me! But it remained there, sleeping. Neither I investigated more about it. Of
course that the history of the conquest of Panama was not the history of the conquest of Mexico,
although they share certain patterns of behavior, and we tends to generalize. By which I followed
my life at margin of the subject.
Peculiarly my contact with Mexico and highlights of their past history continued arriving to me very
subtly. And peculiarly another television program was the means by which I could hear as sonorous
names as Moctecuhzoma, Cuauhtemoc and Chapultepec in comedy key; the "Chavo del Ocho".
Although all this was in a very caricatured and anecdotal key, as the mention of "La Noche Triste"
(Sad Night)  or the torture of the last Aztec emperor episodes in the school chapter of this program.
Even so this was breeding ground for the things will come later. Those just mentioned names, those
events evoked between laughter became like a business card, a sign and an enigma for which at
the right moment I took the key and opened seals to discover a surprising historic past buried
below anecdotes, text books and already known.

***

una cultura compleja. Vamos, no me culpéis, era el resultado de cómo nos enseñaron nuestra historia;
¡Me fascinó!

nombres tan sonoros como Moctezuma, Cuauhtemoc y Chapultepec en clave de comedia;
